Exhibiting at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) is the BMW Art Car Tour, showcased through six floors of the NCP Car Park located on Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, London marking it’s first ever viewing in the United Kingdom.
The collection first conceptualized more than 35 years ago when French car racer and auctioneer Hervé Poulain asked American sculptor Alexander Calder to design a car that romantically paired artistic brilliance with ‘an already perfect object’. The completed endeavor would eventually be used to compete in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1975, hence the BMW Art Car would be born. Since then other world renowned artists have used the German automobile as their canvas such the likes of: Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Ernst Fuchs, Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons, M.J Nelson, Ken Done, Matazo Kayama, Cesar Manrique, A.R. Penck, Esher Mahlangu, Sandro Chia, Jenny Holzer and David Hockney.
Art Drive! – BMW Art Car Tour 1975-2010 is brought in partnership with BMW, the Mayor of London and the London 2012 Festival.
